Wave your tail!
Well, what does your little embryo look like now? This week, the baby is about the size of an orange seed and looks like a tadpole with a big head and tail. Do not worry, it definitely will not turn into a frog! But rather will be a little prince or princess. In any case, to become like a human child, it has to work hard: all major and minor systems of the body and organs must be formed from scratch.
The first system of the baby, which develops from the mesoderm and will soon begin work, is the circulatory system. You may even be able to see and hear its heart on an ultrasound, although it is better to postpone the ultrasound until 6-7 weeks (in case the doctors made an error with the gestational age). At first, your baby’s heart will consist of two tiny canals, heart tubes that diligently pump blood. When these tubes merge together, the embryo will have a real heart, and at that time it will already firmly settle into yours! The mesoderm also forms the muscles, cartilage, bones, and subcutaneous tissues of your baby.
This week several other organs are being formed, for example, a neural tube will come out of the ectoderm — a precursor of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and spine. It's funny that your child consists of some tubes, right? This layer of cells is also a material for skin, hair, nails, milk and sweat glands, and tooth enamel.
From the third layer of embryo cells, the endoderm, the lungs, intestines, urinary system, as well as the thyroid gland, liver, and pancreas will grow. All this sounds like a horror script, (if you're not a horror fan) better to imagine that the kid is going to come out of pieces, like a puzzle — it is much more pleasant.
And on the 5th week, the umbilical cord and placenta work as they should, so avoid junk food, drugs, and of course, alcohol — all this will go straight to the embryo. Be brave: a month and a week are over!
